The same patterns recur across decades. Panics look the same. Crashes follow the same arc. Suppression triggers the same backlash.
If you know what happened in 1968 you can read 2020. If you know 1929 you can read 2008. The dates change. The pattern doesn't.
Different decades, same script
History doesn't repeat because the details are always different. But the structure — the shape of the crisis, the response, the aftermath — is always the same.
The same bubble. The same warnings ignored. The same crash. The same bailout for the people who caused it. The same austerity for the people who didn't. The same promise it won't happen again. Ninety years apart. Same script.
Assassinations. Protests in every city. A pandemic. A divisive election. Police violence on camera. The youth radicalised. The establishment terrified. Two years that rhyme so perfectly it feels like a glitch in the simulation.
Different decade, same mechanism: social control through the fear of being named. In the 50s it was 'Are you now or have you ever been a communist?' Now it's the screenshot. The tool changes. The silencing doesn't.
Same lies about weapons. Same escalation based on fabricated intelligence. Same protests. Same disillusionment. Same veterans abandoned when they came home. Twenty years between them. Nothing learned.
Same moral panic. Same criminalisation of what people choose to put in their bodies. Same organised crime filling the gap. Same disproportionate punishment for the poor. Same eventual admission it didn't work.
What comes back
Some things don't just rhyme — they return. Killed ideas that refuse to stay dead. Technologies declared impossible that turn out to be inevitable.
The most promising psychiatric research of the 20th century, criminalised overnight. Fifty years of suppression. Then Johns Hopkins, MAPS, Imperial College — the same research, the same results, as though the ban was just a pause button.
'Neural networks will never work.' Defunded, mocked, abandoned. Fifty years later: the most transformative technology since electricity. The idea wasn't wrong. The hardware wasn't ready.
CDs killed vinyl. Streaming killed CDs. Then vinyl outsold CDs again. The thing they buried came back because it had something the replacement didn't: warmth. Physicality. The thing you can hold.
